Before The Spare Goes On

01

Get to a safer spot if you can

Driving a short distance on a flat to reach a wide shoulder, exit, or parking lot is often safer than stopping in a traffic lane, though it can damage the wheel. Use your judgment, turn hazards on, and stay well away from traffic while you wait. Our flat tire guide covers these first steps.

02

What a roadside tire change needs

A tire change installs your spare. That means the spare has to be present and inflated, and if your wheels use locking lug nuts, the wheel lock key needs to be in the vehicle. Many newer vehicles carry an inflator kit instead of a spare, so it is worth checking before you call.

Electric vehicles and many European models have specific lifting points and wheel hardware. See EV tire change or European car tire change if that applies.

  • Confirm a spare is in the trunk, under the floor, or under the vehicle
  • Locate the wheel lock key if your vehicle has locking lug nuts
  • Note which tire is flat and whether the wheel itself looks bent
  • Share whether you are on a shoulder, in a lot, or in a driveway

When a tow is the better option

Without a usable spare, with more than one flat, or with a damaged wheel, a tire change may not be possible on site. Dispatch can discuss towing in that case. The full list of on-site services is on our roadside assistance page.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a spare tire for a roadside tire change?

Yes. A tire change installs your spare, so it needs to be present and usable. If you only have an inflator kit or no spare, ask dispatch about towing.

What if my wheels have locking lug nuts?

The wheel lock key needs to be available. It is often in the glove box, center console, or with the spare.

Can you change a tire on an EV or European car?

Brothers offers EV tire change and European car tire change. Tell dispatch your exact vehicle so the right approach is planned.

Should I drive on the flat to reach a safer spot?

Moving a short distance to a wide shoulder or lot can be safer than stopping in traffic, though it may damage the wheel. Use your judgment and prioritize safety.
