Locked Out: What To Do First

01

Emergencies come first

If a child or a pet is locked inside, especially in heat or cold, call 911 right away. Do not wait for a tow company in that situation. For other lockouts, stay somewhere safe and visible while help is coordinated. Our locked out guide covers the first few minutes.

02

What we need to know

Vehicle access depends on the make, model, and year. Dispatch will ask for those details and may ask you to show ID or registration once the vehicle is open, so the owner or authorized driver is confirmed.

Hybrids have their own considerations covered on our hybrid unlock page. If the key is in the vehicle but the car will not start once you are in, a jump start may be the next step.

  • Year, make, and model of the vehicle
  • Where the keys are: visible inside, in the trunk, or lost
  • Whether the engine is running
  • Exact location, including parking level or row if in a garage
03

Lost keys are a different problem

Unlocking a door does not replace a missing key. If the keys are lost rather than locked inside, mention that to dispatch so the options, including towing to a dealer or shop, can be discussed. Other on-site services are listed under roadside assistance.
