Out Of Fuel

Running On Empty: What To Share

01

Tell dispatch the fuel type

The single most important detail is which fuel the vehicle takes. Gasoline and diesel are not interchangeable, and putting the wrong one in can cause expensive damage. Check the fuel door or owner's manual if you are not certain.

  • Fuel type: regular gasoline, premium, or diesel
  • Year, make, and model
  • Exact location and which side of the road you are on
  • Whether the vehicle ran completely dry or stalled while driving
02

If it still will not start

Some vehicles, especially diesels, can be harder to restart after running dry. If the vehicle cranks but will not start after fuel is added, or if the battery drained while you tried, a jump start or a tow may be the next step. Dispatch can talk through that with you.

03

Stranded somewhere other than the road

Running out of fuel in a driveway or parking lot is still a roadside call. See stranded at home for guidance when you are not on a highway. Other on-site services are on our roadside assistance page. Electric vehicles that run out of charge are a different situation; see EV and Tesla towing.
